Firewalls that simply control network access are no longer sufficient safeguards against all intrusion techniques. Is your firewall well managed and up-to-date?
Firewalls are installed at any points in your network where you need to control access; for example, between your internal information network and the external world. They act as gatekeepers, enforcing access rules and permissions. In this way, they protect your network resources from other networks and intruders.
Traditionally firewalls are devices that only enforce access policies. However, as they evolve, many now include advanced application awareness and security capabilities such as intrusion prevention, anti-virus protection, and content filtering.
When choosing firewall technology, it is important to consider both your current and future networking and security requirements. Options to consider include high availability, ISP load sharing or failover, support for in-line anti-virus and IPS. The administrator interface will also determine how easy it is to manage and maintain the devices. This is critical to their efficient deployment and their effectiveness at enforcing the appropriate security policies. Easy to use Graphical User Interfaces and/or web-based access will facilitate the firewall use. NCI recommends firewalls that combine a number of different security features for cost-efficiency.
