Anti-Spam
Preventing bad email from coming in AND securing email going out.
Anti-SPAM is much more than protecting against unsolicited emails. It is also about protecting users from the threats that are imported into the environment by spam. No longer is simple key word scanning sufficient to detect newer threats, a combination of reputation filtering and content scanning is required.
Reputation filtering is the collaboration of multiple sources across the Internet to determine which machines / domains / IP’s are sending huge sums of SPAM. These IP addresses are then dynamically updated to prevent the simplest of TCP connection to email systems. The length of time a domain has been registered and how many emails it sends, help determine the “score” of an IP address. In addition, content scanning such as SPAM content, anti-virus, anti-malware and keyword detection are used to maximize the blocking of unwanted and malicious email.
Anti-SPAM systems must also have the granular ability to re-route email based on policies, and filter based on an integration to an internal LDAP system such as Active Directory. Certain users / groups may have different SPAM thresholds that they are willing to live with. For example, a Public Relations group may want a more open SPAM policy than for example a CEO of an organization.
Organizations need to also be concerned about email leaving their networks. Ensuring that malicious content is not spread and that confidential or private information is not "leaked", a good Anti-SPAM solution must take into consideration integration with a customer’s existing DLP solutions. Additional important features are: granular reporting, secure email exchange support, troubleshooting logs to determine where within the flow of the SMTP transport the message was dropped, and accuracy.
