Disk encryption ensures that although the hardware may be lost or in someone else’s hands, the data will never see the light of day. Also, if these devices are leased, or if you are planning to resell or donate them, you won’t have to spend time cleaning or wiping the drives. This special security software complements the operating system’s own mechanisms and ensures data protection, even if the operating system is by-passed.
If a device does not have adequate protection, thieves could, for example:
· Boot the device using an external medium like a CD and access all the saved data without activating the operating system’s access control
· Find confidential documents and information
· Use the PC to import undesirable data and sneak harmful programs like Trojans or viruses that can then compromise system stability.
